Global Grain Inventories May Help Cushion El Niño-Related Food Supply Risks

Global agricultural markets are paying close attention to the potential impact of a strengthening El Niño on food and feed raw material supply. According to Reuters, weather risks in 2026/27 may bring drought pressure to parts of Asia and flooding risks to parts of the Americas, raising concerns over crop production and international trade flows.

However, the global supply situation is stronger than in many previous weather-risk cycles. Reuters reported that inventories of major commodities including wheat, rice, corn, and soybeans are currently at multi-year highs. These stock levels may help reduce the immediate impact of weather-related production disruptions and provide more flexibility for importing and exporting countries.

For the feed industry, the issue is not only total supply, but also raw material stability, price volatility, and storage management. Corn, wheat, soybean meal, and other feed-related commodities are closely connected with livestock and poultry production costs. When climate uncertainty increases, feed mills and animal nutrition companies need to pay closer attention to procurement timing, raw material quality, moisture control, mold risk, and formulation flexibility.

This development highlights the importance of building more resilient feed supply chains. Stable inventories can help reduce short-term pressure, but feed producers still need practical strategies for raw material evaluation, feed preservation, and quality control, especially in regions exposed to high temperature, humidity, or long-distance transportation.
