Cargill will invest $150 million to upgrade its sunflower seed processing plant in Saint-Nazaire, France, according to a report carried by The Pig Site citing Reuters. The upgrade is intended to help meet growing demand for high-protein meal used in animal feed, while also reducing gas use at the facility.
The investment points to continued demand for locally processed protein ingredients in Europe, where feed manufacturers are paying closer attention to supply security, energy efficiency, and raw material availability. Sunflower meal is one of the alternative protein ingredients used in feed formulations, particularly when soybean meal prices or supply conditions fluctuate.
For feed producers and additive suppliers, the project reflects a broader trend toward regional protein processing capacity, lower-emission production, and more resilient feed raw material supply chains.
