Indonesia Faces Challenges in Meeting New U.S. Soymeal Import Commitments

On February 25, 2026, Reuters reported that Indonesia may face difficulties meeting its new commitment to sharply increase U.S. agricultural imports under a recently finalized trade deal. The agreement includes higher U.S. import targets for wheat, soybeans, and soybean meal, with Indonesia pledging to raise annual U.S. soybean purchases to 3.5 million metric tons and soybean meal imports to 3.8 million metric tons.

Reuters noted that the soybean meal target is far above Indonesia’s previous U.S. purchases. Indonesia bought 216,257 tons of U.S. soybean meal in 2025, while total soybean meal imports reached 5.96 million tons. The country’s state-owned company Berdikari has been assigned to import around 5 million tons of soybean meal in 2026 to supply feed mills and smallholder chicken farmers.

For feed producers and raw material traders, the situation shows how trade agreements can reshape sourcing patterns, procurement costs, and supply-chain planning in the animal feed sector.
